Apple’s iOS 18 software update is now available and people everywhere can install it on their iPhones right now. But should they, and if they do, will it make their iPhone slower?
That’s a question that a lot of people will no doubt be asking. not least because it’s an accusation that has been leveled at iOS updates for years. But what about iOS 18?
Unfortunately, that isn’t always an easy question to answer. The iOS 18 update is available on some older handsets and of course the new iPhone 16 alike. But not all features will be available on all devices, with iOS 18.1’s upcoming Apple intelligence a prime example of that. Apple Intelligence will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max as well as the new iPhones released this year, for example.
In reality, though, people who install iOS 18 shouldn’t worry about performance too much. Sure, iPhones can appear slower immediately after installing a big software update but that is normally because the software is running all kinds of tasks following the update — new caches are being built, AI features are running to identify people and pets in photos, etc.
Apple does have a plan for people who don’t want to take the risk, though. The new iOS 17.7 software update is available for those who don’t want to update to iOS 18.
The update includes new security fixes so people can be sure their iPhones are safe and sound without running the risks that can be associated with big new iOS updates.
